Aliso Viejo is a small city located in the San Joaquin Hills of Southern California. As of the 2016 census, its current population is approximately 52,000, up from 40,166, per the 2000 census. On July 1, 2001, it officially became the 34th city added to Orange County’s list of cities.
The city of Aliso Viejo was a planned community. The community originally had 6,600 acres and was a part of the 26,000 acres known as Moulton Ranch. The Moulton Ranch was owned by the Moulton Family, who took title from Juan Avila in the 1890’s. Over the years, the 26,000 acres the family owned was sold off and became cities that we know today as: Aliso Viejo, Laguna Hills, and Laguna Niguel.
Aliso Viejo was the first community in California to plan a city based project that included the creation of a residential work force within its borders. Pacific Park in Aliso Viejo was centrally located in the town and included 900 acres of the 6,600. The creation of the Business park and town center was to ultimately provide 22,000 jobs for the community. In addition, the city built each home to be located within 1 ½ miles radius of the Park to encourage families a live and work based community.
Much of the original Pacific Park which is now the town center area remains as it was built in the 1980’s. However, as many people know, the area was built as a “live and work community” based small town living. Those who drive in the area daily to get to work, school, and home can attest that the original idea of small town living no longer exists with the population growing by thousands each year. Though the streets are wide, they are crowded with cars traveling to and from the heart of the cities town center and the overcrowded streets in Aliso Viejo during rush hour create the potential for car accidents.
